Meet Our Team: Phumzile Zulu

What three words would you use to describe yourself?

Passionate. Results driven. Empathetic.

How would you describe your day job to a child?

To make sure that, while we are at work, we stay safe, healthy, and careful, and that we do our best to keep the environment beautiful.

Why did you choose to be part of the Vector Logistics’ team?

Vector Logistics demonstrates a strong commitment to sustainability and environmental impact reduction through its support of renewable energy initiatives, investment in electric vehicle fleets, and clear advocacy for ESG principles, including a defined target of achieving a 42% emissions reduction by 2030. As an environmental alumnus and a firm advocate of environmental stewardship, I strongly align with the values and strategic direction of the Vector SHERQ and Sustainability team.

What excites you about this role?

I am motivated by the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the SHERQ pillar and to be part of a dynamic team that is committed to responsibly giving back to the environment through impactful sustainability projects and initiatives.

How would you describe a high-performance organisation?

An organisation where everyone is a team player working toward a shared goal, and where people’s ideas and contributions are valued.

How do you keep yourself/your team motivated?

I stay motivated through continuous learning and reading, which drive both knowledge and inspiration. I motivate my team through regular engagements, open communication, and by empowering them to innovate and take ownership of their contributions.

Do you have a mentor/coach?

Yes, I do, and they have had a very positive impact on my growth.

Given a chance, who would you like to be for a day?

I would choose to be the Head of Supply Chain Innovation and Technology. I believe this role offers a unique vantage point to influence and implement transformative changes across the entire cold chain, directly impacting SHERQ and sustainability objectives.

If you were the CEO for a day, what would you change or introduce?

I would not introduce major changes. Instead, I would implement scheduled engagement sessions with employees across all operational levels to listen to their perspectives and ideas. This would help bridge the gap between leadership and employees and foster a culture of inclusivity and open dialogue.

On a lighter note…

What is your most memorable facepalm (embarrassing) moment?

It was back in 2024 when one of my high heels (stilettos) broke and I had to walk barefoot in a mall – most of the clothing stores were closed.

When was the last time you laughed so hard?

On Sunday, when my five-year-old recorded a video of herself saying, “Don’t forget to like and subscribe to my channel.”

What is your guilty pleasure?

It must be chocolate, knowing that it is often high in sugar and calories and eating too much of it can be unhealthy.

What is one thing people do not know about you?

I have a deep appreciation for poetry - both reading and writing it. There’s something truly captivating about crafting words to evoke emotion and paint vivid pictures. Beyond the literacy world, I’m also very passionate about environmental sustainability, and I express this through upcycling clothes. It’s a creative way to give garments a new life and reduce waste, which I find incredibly rewarding.

If you could invite one famous person (dead or alive) to dinner, who would it be and why?

My late mom - I am the woman I am today because of her.
